![]() The real boon that Banana Fish provides to the LGBT sphere of anime is that it is an amazing crime thriller that just happens to be about two men that have slowly growing feelings for each other. While Banana Fish still has the moments of sexual violence that are unfortunately so common in boy’s love anime, they are a least shown for what they are – horrible acts. This is pretty unique as they are simply characters in the world, and their queerness need not be a focus. While it does have its sports story line that in particular highlights how much sway adults have over the success and failures of children in a sport, it also prominently displays LGBT characters. One wouldn’t expect a sports anime to be one of the better representatives of LGBT in anime, but here we are. Overall, it is an excellent and honest drama about a topic that is too often played for comedy. ![]() Thankfully, it maintains a serious and honest look about a girl and a boy transitioning in their young middle school years as well as a look into being trans as an adult in Japan. There are plenty of trans characters in anime, but this is the only anime series about being trans.
